Long Sleepless Night

February 6, 2008 / by elfie33

If you watched the news anytime today, I'm sure you've heard about all the bad weather TN had yesterday and last night. We were lucky it went over us...but other's weren't so lucky.

Driving to work this morning in the early morning light was like driving in what I can only describe as what looked like a war zone. The tiny communities of Brushy and Aetna...are pretty much destroyed.

It honestly looked like the hand of God came down from heaven and just wiped everything clean. Trees that use to touch each other from the sides of the road...laying flat...homes missing roofs, barns gone...cattle running everywhere...people walking around with that dazed look on their face. It was an awful scene. I think what amazed me most..was the fact that it went straight down the road for about 2 miles...and then nothing was touched. Quite a scene let me tell you.

Road crews and police worked thru the night to clear the road the best they could. Debris was everywhere...hanging in trees, all over the road... Then drive a few more miles and it didn't have damage....and then a few more miles and you start seeing it again...massive trees laying flat...busting power lines, fences...homes, and businesses.. No electricity for miles and road crews and electric companies working thru the night and all day...still working as I left for home. It was a horrific sight.

Pray for these folks...they have a long road ahead.

As I said we were lucky, it went above us...storms woke us up at 2:00 am with the most fantastic lightning that I've ever seen...it was like it was daylight outside it was so bright, it actually shook the windows. We lost power for awhile, but it came back on before daylight. It was quite a night.. Most everyone I talked to today didn't get much sleep last night.

I know Fairview had sirens...but I don't think the smaller towns did.  Jackson where Union University did also.  But the town I live in I know doesn't....we are too small.

    Stay warm Fredo..*hugs*

I'm praying, dear Elfie, for all those who suffered so many losses! I was worried sick for you and yours — it was a terrible storm. Take best care!

  • elfie33 said 6 months ago

Thanks for the prayers hun, this storm ripped a path thru so many communities.  Union University was lucky none of the kids were killed.

It does like like a war zone, doesn't it. Total destruction for several miles then normal landscape. It destroyed the major part of a nature reserve here.

  • elfie33 said 6 months ago

I didn't know how else to describe it....Hope you didn't have damage where you are..*hugs*

I was so worried about you. I honestly thought of you since I turned the Weather Channel on with my first cup of coffee. I am *so* glad that you and yours are okay. *hugs*

And yes, I can't imagine what it looks like in person, the damage. The news footage makes me so sad.

Aww thanks hun, it was a really scary night.  We watched the weather most of the night, because it was just a few miles of us...a couple more miles south and it would have been on top of us.   Very scary.    Driving to work today was so awful I was sick at my stomach seeing all the damage.   It really did look like the finger of God just cleared the land.   So many folks lost their lives all over TN, and Ark and KY.    Has anybody heard from Grumpy or Queenteamum?

I was worried about my friends Chuck and Terry who live near the airport--they are okay but the tornado hit the mall that I use to live by--or at least the property--it wasn't a mall then

  • elfie33 said 6 months ago

Mother nature sure destroyed a lot of property all around TN.   I was shocked to see all the damage.  Frown

This is so tragic and sad.  We have family that lives in western Kentucky and middle and eastern Tennessee.  I pray for all the families that lost loved ones and their homes.  So sad.  I am sorry you all went through this.  I know from where we live and where I grew up just how frightening these storms can be.  Although, I have never been in or close to one that bad.

    (((((((HUGS)))))))

We've been very lucky.  Several storms have been very close to us..some with a 1/2 mile from our house.   One year we had our scanner on and could hear the lady at the little store down from our house screaming that it was headed right down the center of the Hwy..and we could hear the roar...but it missed us.   I hope that all your family is ok..*hugs*

It is always so sad to hear and see these things on the news.  It must be even more difficult for those like yourself that live in the area.  I am so sorry to all of you in the area.

It is a scary site..to see these huge tree laying flat and all the debris and destruction.   Folks around the Brushy and Aetna communites were extremely lucky no one was killed.  If you could see the size of the trees and how close some came to the houses you would be amazed.

  • southwesterngrad said 6 months ago

Thank goodness you were spared.  A horrible night for the South.  Certainly will be saying prayers for those who lost loved ones and their homes.  We know first hand here in OKC exactly what it looks like down there.

  • elfie33 said 6 months ago

Living where you live I'm sure you've seen the worse that mother nature dishes out also.    We were lucky, and we are extremly thankful for that.   The clean up has begun...it still looks bad, but the electric company and road crews are making progress.   The governor is suppose to tour the area today and survey all the damage.

  • anacoana said 6 months ago

Many prayers going that way! Glad you are OK.

Thanks hun...we were very lucky..a few miles in either direction and it could have been us.  *hugs*

Because I've been feeling so lousy, I've been spending a lot of time lazing on the couch with the TV on, so I've been hearing and seeing a lot of coverage on the storm(s), damage, injuries, and deaths.  It is so awful!

I think I said just about the same thing when I commented on another post. It's the same awfulness!  I'm just so relieved that you are ok.

  • elfie33 said 6 months ago

I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well.  Hope you feel better really soon...*hugs tight*   We were lucky, it was all around us but didn't hit us....

  • elderjanememorabilia said 6 months ago

All of us in Oklahoma know about the devastation a tornado leaves behind.  I am so sorry that it happened.  We have spent many good times in your state.  We mourn with you.

  • elfie33 said 6 months ago

I'm sure you do know, Okla get hit a lot.  *hugs*
